August 2008 oil of the Month: Organic Fennel
Here at NHR we are privileged to be able to experiment with a huge range of organic oils and experience their aroma, vibrancy and therapeutic effects at any given moment. We are able to explore which oils are appropriate for us as individuals and also at certain times in our lives as our circumstances change or as we embrace another seasonal shift.
We would like to share some of our knowledge with you and so each month will 'introduce' an oil to our customers exploring some of the benefits. This August, we would like to feature 'Organic Fennel' (foeniculum vulgare) .
Sweet Fennel is a cultivated herb which is grown largely in the mediterranean with golden yellow flowers. The oil is distilled from the crushed seeds and produces a pale yellow, highly mobile oil which has a sweet aniseed aroma. Fennel is used widely in aromatherapy and extensively in the food and drinks industry, often found in lozenges, liqueurs and as a scent in toiletries and perfumes. It is also an ingredient in children's 'Gripe water'.
In therapeutic terms it can be used in relation to the digestive system and may help to optimise the effective elimination of toxins. It is reputed to have antisceptic and anti-microbial properties making it a key oil to have in the home kit. Fennel also lends itself to skincare treatments (diluted) and is suitable for mature complexions. It can be applied to bruises.
As with all essential oils there are psychological and emotional responses to the aroma - fennel is known for it's calming effect and on a deeper level is supposed to protect from negative energies - a useful aid for the sensitive soul.
