Botanical name ~ Elettaria cardamomum.

Aroma ~ Sweet, spicy, clearing aroma.

Extracted ~ steam distillation.
 
Part of plant ~ dried ripe seeds.

Country of Origin ~ Madagascar

Chemical Constituents ~ 1,8 cineol, terpinyl acetate, linalol.

Description ~ A perennial, reed-like herb, Cardamom grows wild and is cultivated in India and Sri Lanka. It grows up to 4 meters (13 feet) and has long, green silky blades, small yellowy flowers, with a violet tip and a large fleshy rhizome, similar to ginger. Oblong gray fruits follow the flowers, each containing many seeds.

Traditional Use ~ Useful in mental fatigue. Sweetens the breath.

Common uses ~ Supports digestive system, especially for stomach issues, and breaking down and absorption phase (rather than elimination).  It is listed in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as a 'specific' for flatulence and dyspepsia. Cardamom is particularly helpful for the digestive system.
