STORY AT-A-GLANCE- Researchers from Korea compared lavender oil’s effects as a hair growth stimulant to the drug minoxidil (Rogaine)

- Traditionally, lavender oil is used for stress relief and fatigue, and evidence suggests it may be effective for cellular growth, skin reproduction and alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss
- Peppermint oil also works "remarkably” well to promote hair growth compared to saline and jojoba oil, and regrows hair "even faster than” minoxidil
A healthy head of hair is widely regarded as a sign of beauty and vitality. So, for the significant number of men and women who experience hair loss and hair thinning, negative psychological consequences, including low self-esteem, anger and depression,1 are common. Hair also serves some important biological purposes, including cushioning your head against blows, keeping your scalp warm and providing a natural cover from excess sun. Heavy metals, including arsenic, mercury and zinc, are also excreted in your hair, serving as a detoxification aid. With hair loss having effects that are more than skin deep, researchers have been on the hunt for products to stimulate hair growth. Here nature once again provides, with lavender oil coming out on top against the hair loss drug minoxidil (Rogaine). Researchers Pit Lavender Oil Against FDA-Approved Hair DrugIn a study on mice, researchers from Korea set out to determine lavender oil’s effects as a hair growth stimulant compared to minoxidil, a drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that’s the most common treatment for androgenetic alopecia, a common form of hair loss. There are three cycles of hair growth.2 The anagen phase is the growth phase in which the matrix cells of the hair follicle are fully pigmented and undergoing vigorous growth activities. Catagen is the resting phase, when activity decreases. In the third phase, telogen, the hair detaches from the follicle and falls out. During normal hair cycles, about 90% of hair follicles are in the anagen phase, 1% are in the catagen phase and 9% are in the telogen phase. In the case of pattern hair loss, "There appears to be a dysfunction and imbalance in hair cycling, resulting in a reduced length of anagen phase, increased proportion of hair in catagen/telogen phase and a shift toward the production of fine, short hairs,” researchers explained in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology.3 Topical minoxidil works by inducing resting hair follicles into the anagen phase, shortening the telogen phase and prolonging the anagen phase. This leads to an increase in hair follicle volume.4 Lavender oil, meanwhile, also has a number of active effects, due to compounds including linalyl acetate — which relaxes nerves — linalool, an antifungal, and geraniol. Traditionally, lavender oil is used for stress relief and fatigue, and evidence suggests it may be effective for cellular growth, skin reproduction and alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.5 Lavender Oil Works Better Than Rogaine for Hair GrowthFor the Korean study, researchers applied lavender oil at concentrations of 3% or 5%, with minoxidil or jojoba oil as a control to the fur of mice five times a week for four weeks. Both lavender oil groups as well as the minoxidil group had a significantly increased number of hair follicles, deepened hair follicle depth and thickened dermal layer.6 "These results indicated that LO [lavender oil] has a marked hair growth-promoting effect, as observed morphologically and histologically … Thus, LO could be practically applied as a hair growth-promoting agent,” the researchers noted.7 Past research has found aromatherapy using lavender oil increased hair growth rates in people with alopecia areata.8 Massaging a mixture of essential oils, including lavender, into the scalp daily led to improvements in 44% of alopecia areata patients, compared to 15% of those in the control group. "Treatment with these essential oils was significantly more effective than treatment with the carrier oil alone,” researchers wrote in Archives of Dermatology.9 Peppermint Oil Also Promotes Hair GrowthTreatments for hair loss are limited and those that are available are saddled with risks. Minoxidil, which was originally created as a drug for high blood pressure, may cause increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, weight gain, edema and dermatitis, itching and scaling of the scalp.10 Nontoxic support for hair loss is therefore urgently needed, and, along with lavender oil, peppermint oil is one such option. In a similar study on mice, researchers applied minoxidil, jojoba oil, saline or 3% peppermint oil to mice for four weeks. Out of all the treatments, peppermint oil worked best, leading to the "most prominent hair growth effects.” This included a significant increase in dermal thickness, follicle number and follicle depth. Two biomarkers for enhanced hair growth — alkaline phosphatase and gene expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 — also significantly increased. Not only did peppermint oil "remarkably” promote hair growth compared to saline and jojoba oil, but it did so "even faster than” minoxidil.11 "These results suggest that PEO [peppermint oil] induces a rapid anagen stage and could be used for a practical agent for hair growth,” the team explained.12 One way it works to promote hair growth is by relaxing vascular muscle, promoting blood circulation.13 Onion Juice Reverses Thinning HairHair loss has complex underlying causes. It can occur with age and genetic factors, but stress and nutritional imbalances also play a role.14 In the case of alopecia areata, however, the immune system attacks healthy hair follicles, leading to varying degrees of hair loss. Both genetics and environmental factors play a role in this autoimmune condition, but in the early stage, alopecia areata is associated with inflammation in the upper dermis skin layer.15 As such, topical garlic16and onion juice may help. In one study, 23 people with alopecia areata applied onion juice twice daily for two months. A control group of 15 people applied tap water over the same period. Significant differences were found, with onion juice leading to regrowth of terminal coarse hairs — the type that grows on your scalp and forms your eyelashes and eyebrows — after just two weeks. By four weeks, 73.9% of those applying onion juice had hair re-growth, which increased to 86.9% by week six. Significantly more men (93.7%) experienced hair regrowth than women (71.4%). For comparison, only 13% of those in the tap water group had hair regrowth.17 "The present study showed that the use of crude onion juice gave significantly higher results with regard to hair regrowth than did tap water (P<0.0001), and that it can be an effective topical therapy for patchy alopecia areata,” the researchers concluded.18 Onion juice’s effectiveness of 86.9% is better than that of commonly used topical and systemic therapies for alopecia areata, including BCG immunotherapy, which has an effectiveness rate of 69%, and topical immunotherapy, which is 58% effective.19 Onions are rich in anti-inflammatory quercetin, which also enhances the expression of the antioxidant enzyme catalase20 in your scalp. This helps break down hydrogen peroxide that contributes to cell damage and thinning hair.21 Antigenic competition — the inhibition of the immune system’s response to one antigen when another antigen is administered — may also help explain onion’s hair growth-stimulating effects. According to the team:22 "Previous reports have stated that onion can induce allergic contact dermatitis in some individuals; however, more recent studies showed that onion extract can inhibit skin allergic reactions, suggesting that onion juice may induce an immunological reaction, possibly as a mild form of dermatitis that can stimulate hair re-growth through antigenic competition.
… If there were a relative lack of T-suppressor cells in the lymphocytic infiltrate of alopecia areata, the generation of non-specific T-suppressor cells might inhibit the ongoing autoimmune reaction. Another possible mechanism, is that onions belong to the genus Allium, which is rich in sulphur and phenolic compounds, both of which are known skin irritants. Onion may cause an irritant contact dermatitis.”
Three More Natural Options for Hair LossApplying potentially toxic topical drugs to your scalp is not the only option to stimulate hair growth. Other nontoxic options include: - Ginseng — This herb and its active compounds ginsenosides are known to promote hair growth.23 They help regulate the expression and activity of proteins involved in hair-cycling phases, including the induction of anagen and delaying of catagen phases.24
- Pine bark extract — This natural compound is heralded for its ability to improve hair density. A double blind, randomized, placebo‐controlled study revealed pine park extract increased hair density by 30% among postmenopausal women after two months of treatment, and 23% after six months, with researchers suggesting it "might have the potential to reduce hair loss in postmenopausal women.”25
- Scalp massage — The relaxing stretching of skin on your scalp is a form of mechanical stress that may lead to increased hair thickness.26 Adding diluted rosemary oil to your scalp massage may improve results even more, with research showing it also works as well as minoxidil to increase hair count in people with hair loss.27 If you prefer, lavender oil or peppermint oil can also be used.
Nutritional factors should also be considered. When researchers assessed patients from the Center for Dermatology and Hair Diseases who arrived with complaints of hair loss, they found that 38% of the women had a biotin deficiency.28 Biotin is a cofactor for an enzyme that is crucial in the metabolism of glucose, fatty acids and amino acids. It’s also used in the production of hormones and cholesterol.29 You can find biotin in spinach, broccoli and sweet potatoes, as well as egg yolks, organ meats and dairy products. Malnutrition, iron deficiency anemia and thyroid disease are also linked to hair loss, as is telogen effluvium, which is when hair falls out after a major body stress. Side effects from some drugs, medical illness and a fungal infection of the scalp can also cause hair loss. So, while applying lavender and peppermint oils, and onion juice, topically may help to support hair regrowth, it’s important to assess the underlying reasons why your hair is falling out, and seek a comprehensive lifestyle strategy to resolve it.

It is feeling like a tentative sign of the pandemic is finally changing
into an endemic with the possible milder Omicron variant, I am hoping we
can learn to now live with it like bad flu and hopefully with
greater ease. I think soon over the next few months or weeks we will
start hearing about how booster vaccinations are no longer
as necessary, apart from for the vulnerable. By the latest
estimates, nearly half the population has now had Omicron, so natural
immunity is taking over and within 6 months nearly everyone will have
caught Omicron and vaccinations will fill in the gaps for the most
vulnerable. So here is to edging towards a near-normal again for
2022..... fingers crossed!

The Milimani School and Orphanage Autumn/Winter 2021 News The latest project NHR is working on together with the milimani school and orphanage is installing an electricity supply
to aid the children in their learning and general wellbeing. This will be happening over the next few months.
Read below a few words from the director of the orphanage Victor: The pressure and stress was ignited by immediate need of electricity at the centre since the class seven should be sitting for their primary education certificate soon.
There is pressure that the children have their night and dawn preps with the teachers daily
. We do not have electricity still though we had done an Application. The cost seemed to be beyond our reach.
The children have to start their evening and dawn classes or else they miss national exam enrolment. The cost was coming in at Kshs. 130,000. Get all the updates from the Millimani Newsletter here

NHR Organic oils have been involved with the Milimani Orphanage in Kenya for a number of years now. It has 165 vulnerable children and around 15 staff and teachers.
Recently it has been a huge challenge for them to find funding and the coronavirus is putting extra pressure on the orphanage.
So this year NHR Organic Oils now funds the whole orphanage. It is run by Victor Odula and his and my vision is to transform it from a struggling orphanage
into a thriving school with amazing opportunities for the children. A lot of the children are very vulnerable some with HIV and little prospects of
getting skills or a proper education. The school is surrounded by extreme poverty, often with the older children being forced or coerced into the
sex trade and drugs to get enough money to survive and the only way to earn money. We have a real opportunity to work directly with this
orphanage which I know very well and have been involved with for over 15 years, so every pound you and we donate goes directly to them.
For example, the total running costs for all the 15 staff and feeding the 165 children is less than £10,000 per year for everything.
A huge amount of money for the orphanage, but for us relatively much less, this would hardly pay the wages for one person in the UK.
NHR Organic Oils is paying this amount at the moment to fund the whole orphanage. But they are only just surviving and I would love to see them thrive,
and be given a real chance in all their lives, so please donate to this worthy cause where each pound will actually make a true difference to these children.
Every pound you give will be given directly to the Milimani Orphanage. The money will pay for the following projects which will last for years to come and transform the lives of these children so they will have the skills
to actually work and have a real chance in their lives

Visionary Teacher, Intuitive Guide and Artist I have been working with Michal for over 25 years, my life has been deeply transformed in so many ways, the journey and gratitude go ever deeper, as each layer reveals itself, for another opportunity for growth. COP26
NHR and the Kelburn Circle NHR recently donated 80 10ml bottles of our Organic Antiseptic and Immune Defence Essential Oil Blend and 1kg of Organic Jojoba Carrier Oil to an initiative attending the COP26 conference in Scotland.
Below are some words from the initiative head Charlotte Pulver: "I am currently working on a new initiative which I felt you may like to support taking place next week in Glasgow for the UN Cop26 Climate conference where delegates are flying in from all over the world to attend a 2 week event
which some say really is the tipping point in climate change talks. One of the organisers and hosts at the Cop26 heard about the immune support I provided last year for the NHS and was wanting to create a similar
wellness pack for 80 indigenous delegates who are representing at the conference. These are all low represented indigenous groups (spanning Africa, Artic region, Central America, Amazon, India) for whom we are

COP26
COP26: Where do we go from here?
A letter from Soil Association CEO and Organic Farmer Helen Browning "It’s hard to know how to feel about the long awaited and much hyped COP26. As I write, the final text is still being debated, there is progress but it’s clear that it still won’t be enough.
Over the last fortnight, the voices that have had the biggest impact on me are those from the less developed world, or from the island states, whose future is being decimated
by the mess industrialised and thereby rich nations have wrought. I feel the same outrage that I first felt as a teenager, when I failed to comprehend how it was possible to enjoy our relatively comfortable lives,
knowing that people in many parts of the world were starving. I despair of our humanity, and therefore for humanity. I despair too, of politicians and business leaders who cannot lead beyond their self interest.
But then, they have no alternative model for their businesses or their economies. How does Saudi maintain its way of life beyond oil? What can New Zealand do without ruminant livestock?
How does BP thrive in a world without fossil fuels? And how unfair is it to expect countries still at the beginning of their development to give up the cheap fuel that has allowed us to become wealthy,
without adequate help and compensation?
The transition to the future we need will be tough for many countries, businesses and individuals, and yet we have to make that transition, and fast. Are we really up for that? That’s an ‘us’ question, not a ‘them’ one.
For states and businesses to act, they need to know that their citizens and consumers will back them, that we will accept the privations and disturbance to our current way of life.
We must signal that, loud and clear.
What the Soil Association, with our many partners, can show is a way of living that puts the organic values of care,
health, ecology and fairness at the core of our decision making process, at the heart of our food system.
We cannot have everything, but we can have enough. There is joy in constraint, of living within our means, of making things last, of moving away from the fast food, disposable fashion, single use world
. And we must maintain the joy we experience of this extraordinary world, with its extraordinary people, alongside the anger and frustration
. Relentless urgency, bold ambition, brilliant execution from a place of calm detachment and compassion.

Story from Kolinka Zinovieff
About 5 years ago my dentist told me my gums were receding badly in various places and sent me to the periodontist and was adamant I needed deep gum tissue and root cleaning work to avoid further tooth and bone loss, it was very serious they said! The procedure sounded fine and normal until I asked them what they actually did! It involves peeling back your gums or tearing them away from your teeth, to put it bluntly, then cleaning the bacteria and scale from the roots and re-stitching your gums back into place….. "ouch" was my reaction. Apparently, this is a normal standard periodontal deep cleaning procedure. Anyway, I delayed it for 3 years with ever increasing pressure from my dentist and further receding gums and threats of bone and tooth loss. "There is no alternative apart from losing your teeth and more bone loss” they all said in unison. Making me feel ever more irresponsible for the delay. It seems this condition runs in my family. I decided to do some research and experiments and created an NHR blend of very strong antibacterial and gum healing essential oils. And for two years put a few drops on my toothbrush every day for a week and then stopped for a few weeks. Then returning to my dentist after two years, he said I was the first patient he had ever seen whose gums had healed, and have started to grow back, and not recede further and even accepted I no longer needed to see a periodontist….. phew. We are hoping to re-open this summer in July, fingers crossed.
The Mill has been completely redecorated and updated, and the barn converted, so it is all looking shiny new and elegant, so all we need is some lovely visitors to come and the corona virus to go way.

NHR Organic Oils has been involved with the Milimani Orphanage in Kenya for a number of years now. It has 165 vulnerable children and around 15 staff and teachers. Recently it has been a huge challenge for them to find funding and the coronavirus is putting extra pressure on the orphanage.
So this year I am with NHR Organic Oils funding the whole orphanage.
I feel I am at the stage where giving back feels more and more needed and it is interesting how so many people are now feeling this. That is why it feels so rewarding and important to be able to use NHR Organic Oils to help and support and give us all an opportunity to help and support and transform in our lives, and for me the Milimani Orphanage.
It is run by Victor Odula and it is his and my vision to transform it from a struggling orphanage into a thriving school with amazing opportunities for the children. A lot of the children are very vulnerable, some with HIV and little prospect of getting skills or a proper education. The school is in an area surrounded by extreme poverty with often the older children being forced or coerced into the sex trade and drugs to get enough money to survive and the only way to earn money. We have a real opportunity to work directly with this orphanage, which I know very well and have been involved with for over 15 years, so every pound you and we donate goes directly to them.

The total running costs for the whole orphanage, all 15 staff and feeding the 165 children is less than £10,000 per year for everything. This is a huge amount of money to the orphanage, but to us, comparatively much less, as this amount would hardly pay the wages of one person in the UK.
NHR Organic Oils is paying this amount at the moment to fund the orphanage. However the orphanage is only just surviving because of recent loss of funding and the coronavirus. I would love to see them thrive, and be given a real chance in all their lives, I think this is really possible and would not take that much money if we all pay a little bit, We need to raise £30,000.
The money will pay for the following long term education and development projects which will last for years to come and transform the lives of these children. They will have then have the skills to actually work and make a living and earn their own money, and have a real chance in their lives.
This money you donate will go towards the following:
A forest and vegetable growing environmental Centre for both food and education - £1,565
Computer ICT Resource Centre and class with 20 PC's allowing the children access to online education and learn to use the intertnet and computer skills - £7,001
A vocation Centre and workshop for carpentry and welding including all tools giving the children vocational skills to get work - £5,843 A tailoring and dressmaking class with all material again giving the children vocational skills to get work - £4,114 A farming course and a field on which to farm and grow food and crops to both feed the orphanage and learn how to feed themselves and for the children to set up for own farms in the future - £3.307

These projects will last for many years to come and potentially transform hundres of children's lives. Mill Retreat Centre news 2020
Due to the coronavirus we have had to sadly close the Mill Retreat Centre for 2020.
We are giving full refunds including deposits to all groups, as we know what a challenging time it is for us
and for everyone.
We are in the middle of completely redecorating the Mill Retreat Centre during 2020, so it will look shiny and fresh, and even more beautiful for 2021.
We are even renovating the rear barn to make some extra bedrooms and living space see photos below. So we are all looking forward to welcoming you for 2021.
