What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, obtained through expression or steam distillation of flowers, bark, leaves, fruits and roots. The easiest essential oil to see, is the pure essential oil that comes out of orange peel when you squeeze. Try it. Orange peel contains large quantities of oil, making it one the cheapest oils to buy. In contrast to Rose petals, which have very little oil in them, making it the most expensive oil. Most Rose Absolute oil you buy is not pure and is usually mixed with man-made chemicals creating a therapeutically useless - and in some cases toxic - oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted with carrier oil before applying to the skin. We sell only the highest quality pure Organic essential oils, all certified Organic by the Soil Association.

What are Absolute Oils?

The delicate nature of many flowers, which make oils like Rose and Jasmine, means that the heat from steam distillation can damage the oil if not extracted very carefully. So a solvent is used to extract what is termed an absolute, thereby capturing the fragrance without the risk of damaging the fragile flowers or aroma. Absolutes cannot be certified Organic as they have minute traces of solvent in them, but the absolutes we sell do come from Organic flowers. For that reason we also sell Organic steam distilled Rose oil and Organic Neroli oil, one of the very few companies in the world to do so. They are produced from a very special steam distillation process keeping heat exposure down to a minimum creating a wonderfully fresh and pure aroma.

How do I Use Essential Oils?

Baths: Add 5-10 drops to base oil, milk or honey, and stir into your bath.
Massage: Add 10-15 drops of essential oil to 20ml of NHR base oil (or 40-70 drops to 100ml).
Steam inhalation: Place 3-6 drops of NHR's "Breathe-Easy" oil - or an essential oil of your choice - into a bowl of boiling water, cover your head over the bowl and breathe in the steam.
Room burners: Put 3-6 drops of essential oils in some water in the bowl of the burner.
Skin and hair care: Add essential oils to your creams, lotions and shampoos to enhance their therapeutic actions. Mix 10-20 drops of essential oil to 100ml of shampoo, creams or lotions.
For Babies and Children: When using with children, always dilute essential oils in a good quality base oil 5 first. Use a lower dilution for children: 5-10 drops (for babies 2-4 drops) of essential oil per 20ml of base oil. See menu bar for NHR's exquisite and beautifully nourishing Organic Baby range.

Storage Instructions and Shelf Life

Essential oils can be kept for approximately 1-2 years, if stored in a cool, dark area. Exceptions are the citrus oils, which need to be kept in the fridge, especially in warm weather.
